Modem
  • See modulator-demodulator. A device that modulates and demodulates signals.
  • Note 1: Modems are primarily used for converting digital signals into quasi-analog signals for transmission over analog communication channels and for reconverting the quasi-analog signals into digital signals.
  • Note 2: Many additional functions may be added to a modem to provide for customer service and control features. See signal conversion equipment. See also acoustic coupler, data circuit-terminating equipment, input/output device, narrowband modem, peripheral equipment, quasi-analog signal, wideband modem.
  • 2. A device which connects to a telephone line and transforms a digital bit stream into an analog signal and vice versa. Modems may be internal or external to the hardware of a computer. (NSAM 130-1).
