Need To Know
  • A criterion used in security procedures that requires the custodians of classified information to establish, before disclosure, that the intended recipient must have access to the information to perform his or her official duties. (JP 1-02)
  • A determination made by the processor of sensitive information that a prospective recipient, in the interest of national security, has a requirement for access to, knowledge of, or possession of the sensitive information in order to perform official tasks or services. (CSC-STD-004-85)
  • The necessity for access to, knowledge of, or possession of certain information required to carry out official duties. Responsibility for determining whether a person's duties require that possession of or access to such information and whether the individual is authorized to receive it rests upon the individual having current possession, knowledge, or control of the information involved and not upon the prospective recipient(s).
